style of play (folk, country, finger-style, acoustic rock, open tuning, blues, etc.) Second recommendation: know what is important to you: It's an amazing resource and you'll quickly find out who knows what they are talking about. My first recommendation: become a lurker at The Acoustic Guitar Forum. What seems like a simple task at first can grow in scope as you learn about the differences and what is important to you (much like investing, buying a car, etc.). I went through this process a few years ago. Let your ears, hands, and fingers be your guide. We cherry picked a nice Seagull and a great sounding low end Martin as well, but played several of them before choosing. There was variability in the Recording King examples.I chose a model that was a copy of a Martin OM-18.but we cherry picked one that sounds as good or better than any sub-$1K guitar I have played.

When I bought the guitars for my sons, they brought up 5-10 instruments of the model I wanted and my son and I tried each of them. I am lucky to live about 15 minutes from Elderly Instruments, one of the finest acoustic shops in America. Be ware of the national chains because the stuff on the floor is often poorly-set up and often has dead strings. Not sure where you live but see if you can find a well-stocked guitar shop. Guitars in the sub-$1K range do not have the consistency that their more expensive brothers do. Fine tune down to maybe 2-3 models that you might like and play a bunch of each. My advice is to try as many guitars of the same model as you can. Now here is the rub guitars can be very subjective depending upon your playing style, personal preference for playability, what sounds good to you, heck even just your level of sophistication. They just aren't, especially in the core models of those two companies.

The Seagull is a nice instrument for the money although I strongly take issue that they are as good or better than Martins, Taylors, etc. The latter is not well-known but can be outstanding instruments for the money. I am not familiar with much in the sub-$1K arena but two that I have purchased for my sons (including a lower-priced Martin) are Seagull and Recording King. Truthfully, Yamaha is OK but I think you can do better. Martin's niche is more the high end of the spectrum, but their sub-$1K models are very nice. Taylor in particular seems to make a guitar that shoppers in that price range like. I would suggest not overlooking Martins and Taylors in their lower end models. I have played since 1964 and have played Martins exclusively since 1974. I am going to give you slightly different advice.
